"I wish not merely to be called a Christian, but also to be Christian."
St. Ignatius of Antioch
The Church recognizes the existence of Seven Sacraments instituted by the Lord.
The Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Confirmation and the Eucharist)
The Sacraments of Healing (Penance and the Anointing of the Sick)
The Sacraments at the Service of Communion (Marriage and Holy Orders)
The purpose of the sacraments is to sanctify men, to build up the Body of Christ and, finally, to give worship to God. Because they are signs they also instruct. They not only presuppose faith, but by words and objects, they also nourish, strengthen, and express it. That is why they are called "sacraments of faith".
(Sacraments make us holy and help us to be better people of faith. They help teach us our faith and live our faith.)
